How To Troubleshoot USB Issues On A Dell XPS Computer

Many computer peripherals and devices now come equipped with USB ports that let you connect to the computer easily. Just about any computer that you buy today comes with one or more Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectors. These USB connectors let you attach mouse, printers and other accessories to your computer quickly and easily.

Windows support USB as well, so the installation of the device drivers is quick and easy. Compared to other ways of connecting devices to your computer (including parallel ports, serial ports and special cards that you install inside the computer's case), USB devices are incredibly simple.

Let’s take the case of Dell XPS computer. In certain cases, the device may not work properly if your computer's USB ports are experiencing problems. To fix a USB issue with your Dell XPS computer in Windows, you need to ensure that the operating system is recognizing the ports and make sure you have the latest BIOS.

  • If you have problems with your USB device, unplug the device from the currently connected USB port. Try connecting it to a different USB port on the Dell XPS computer and check if the problem persists.
  • Go to the Start menu and click on Control Panel. This will bring up the Control Panel window. From the Control Panel window, choose Performance and Maintenance. Now select the option System.
  • You will now get a new window, from which you have to click on the Hardware tab. Further, click on Device Manager. This will display a list of hardware components connected to your computer. Go though the list and locate the heading labeled Universal Serial Bus Controllers and click on it. Right-click the first USB port entry and click on Uninstall.
  • You will find a few USB entries listed under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers heading. Repeat the uninstall process on each USB entry. Once you have finished the process, close the Device Manager window and restart your XPS computer.
  • When you get the Found New Hardware prompt, follow the onscreen installation instructions. Remove the USB device and plug it back in. Attempt to use the device to see if the issue has been resolved.
  • Launch your Web Browser and navigate to the Dell support page. Click Select Model and then choose Desktops. Click XPS and select the specific model of XPS computer that you use.
  • Click the BIOS heading and select the download link for the most recent BIOS version. Double-click the BIOS file and execute the installation steps. Restart Windows XP after the installation completes.
If the problem is with your Windows operating system, you can get in touch with the Windows Support team through the Microsoft Support Center and get needed assistance.

Instructions For Retrieving Compacted Emails In Outlook Express

Microsoft Outlook Express periodically compacts emails to save space. You can perform a manual compaction process, when required, to keep the application to function efficiently. The compacted emails for each folder are stored in a database file. You may have problems retrieving the compacted messages if the database file is damaged.

Microsoft has updates available on its website to help you retrieve compacted mails in Outlook Express, and you can locate the database file in which the emails or backup copies of the files are stored. Assistance is available through Microsoft help line and chat support for those who have issues with using Outlook Express.

  • Launch the Microsoft Outlook Express application by clicking on the Start button from the Windows desktop and then clicking on Outlook Express from the Start menu or the Programs menu. Alternatively, you can click on the Outlook Express icon on your Windows desktop or your taskbar.
  • Click on the View menu and click on Current View. Ensure that Show All Messages is checked and the Show Replies to My Messages box is not checked. Your messages might not be missing, but are simply excluded from your current view settings. If you are able to retrieve your missing messages after changing these settings, do not perform the following troubleshooting steps, as your database files are not affected.
  • Navigate to Microsoft’s KB918069 page with your Web browser. Outlook Express is a Microsoft product and Microsoft has Knowledge Base (KB) articles available to provide technical support for known issues with its products. KB918069 helps you to retrieve compacted emails in Microsoft Outlook Express 6. Go through the entire article before proceeding.
  • Download Security Update MS06-076 and the KB918766 package using the links provided on the page. Double-click on the downloaded files and follow the on-screen wizard to install the software updates. You may be required to restart the Outlook Express application.
  • Double-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop to open the Recycle Bin. After you have installed the update, Outlook Express will automatically place backup copies of your database files in the Recycle Bin after compaction with a .bak extension. Right-click on a BAK file and click on Restore from the drop-down menu.
  • Locate the Mail_folder_name.bak file from your computer. Right-click on the file, click on the Rename option and change the extension to .dbx, so that the filename is changed to Mail_folder_name.dbx.
Start Outlook Express again. It should have retrieved the compacted mails from the DBX file for that mail folder. For more assistance, contact Microsoft Help Line and their tech support executives will help you fix the problem.

Learn How To Delay Or Schedule Email Delivery On Outlook 2010

Have you ever been in a situation where you wished you could undo sending one particular email? Or perhaps you have an email you want delivered on a schedule rather than sending it immediately. In either case, Outlook 2010 makes it simple as long as you know where Microsoft has tucked away the feature.  Good news for you, here we are to show you how to defer or schedule an email in Microsoft Outlook. Read on to know more about Microsoft Outlook and how the process is done.

  • Launch Outlook 2010 and click New E-mail to compose a new message.
  • In the new message, click the Options ribbon and then click Delay Delivery.
  • Under the Delivery Options heading, check Do not deliver before: and then select a date and time that you would like the email to be delivered on.  When finished, click Close. That covers delivery of a single item in Outlook.
  • In Outlook 2010, click File, then Info and then click the Manage Rules & Alerts button at the bottom.
  • The Rules and Alerts window should pop-up.  Click New Rule.
  • In the Rules Wizard that appears under Start from a blank rule, click Apply rule on messages I send.  Then click the Next button.
  • You will now be taken to the next window where you don’t have to do anything.  Simply click Next and skip it entirely.
  • Because we selected no conditions, Outlook will prompt to apply the rule to every message sent from it.  Click Yes to confirm this option.
  • Now you need to select an action. You can set to defer delivery by a number of minutes.  Select the checkbox for Defer delivery by a number of minutes. Scroll down and click on the blue link written as “a number of” which will bring up the Deferred Delivery dialog box. Type in the number of minutes you would like Outlook to wait before sending emails. Once you’ve entered this, click OK and then Next.
  • Next, we will choose exceptions.  To make sure that high priority emails get through, we need to select the checkbox for “except if it is marked as importance”. Now go down to the bottom and click the blue link written as “importance” and select High from the dropdown box.  Once done, click OK and then Next.
  • In the window that appears, under “Step 1:”, type in a name for your Outlook send undo / delay delivery rule.  Once you’ve done that, leave everything as it is and click Finish.
Once these few steps are executed, Outlook will be set up to delay / defer delivery of every single email you send, unless the email is marked as High priority. This will allow you to undo any emails and fetch you time to review mails before you send them. If you want to know more about Microsoft Outlook and its features, go through the Outlook help menu and learn more tips.
